Do you have an emergency first aid kit? Maybe it’s just band-aids and antiseptic, or perhaps a full Home Emergency Kit with a torch, batteries, and emergency contacts.
This week, I’ve been imagining a different kind of kit—one for spiritual emergencies. Something to ground me when world events feel overwhelming, to keep my heart open instead of consumed by grief, anger, or despair.
I picture it in a glass box with a small hammer and a sign:
“Break glass in case of emergency.”
Inside My Kit:
Glimmers of Hope – Small moments of joy and calm, like sunlight on water, ocean air, or a starry night.
Awareness of Presence – A simple prayer: “I breathe in Your love, I breathe in Your peace.”
Naming Emotions – Acknowledging feelings rather than pushing them away. “Softness and vulnerability keep us close to what matters.” — John O’Donohue
Taking Action – Love in action heals despair. A kind word, a helping hand, a commitment to compassion.
“…Follow your soul’s yearning to come home to God’s grace and generosity. Let gratitude show you the way.” — Doctrine and Covenants 165:2b… “….Live, love, and share as Zion: those who strive to be visibly one in Christ, among whom there are no poor or oppressed.” Doctrine and Covenants 165:6a
When the world feels heavy, this is how I stay anchored.
What would you put in your emergency kit?
Warmly
