Colouring Within*

As I hand my little grandson a box of markers if I could tell him anything,
It would be that all the colours are already within him.
That he must never become afraid of white paper as some adults are,
And he must treat each colour as a stroke of luck, a gateway to wonder.

And as he begins to scribble his rainbow colours across his heart and mine,
I would tell him that possibilities are endless.
I would tell him that colours are the language of light,
And to never stop looking for that light deep down.

That somehow light is energy and so is love.
That even though light and love may be concealed from his heart and his mind sometimes,
I would tell him that showing up with all you have is important.
And he would say, “OK, can we bake an Orange Cake?”

I would promise to find the ingredients, so this is possible,
And we would find a pan that could contained all his passion, some sugar and almond meal,
And oranges of course… and we would bake it together,
I would tell him, you are made of the same elements as the universe……

…And you are holy, and good. You are meant to be here.
I would tell him, you are how God shows up in the world; the way you love, the way you talk. We are waiting for your whisper.
And he would smile from ear to ear and ask, “Would you like a piece of cake?”
